Vrsar: where the sea remembers stories

By Zdravko R. · July 25, 2020

Hilly with beautiful views yet Pelagian in spirit, Vrsar is one of those coastal towns sprinkled with hidden mysteries.

Between Poreč and Rovinj, where the Istrian coast curves like a sleeping wave, Vrsar rises gently above the blue — a town of stone and salt, memory and breeze. Once a fishing village guarded by bishops and sailors, today it hums with the same rhythm as the tides that shaped it. The sea reaches deep into its story — through the Lim Bay fjord, through the islands that float offshore, and through the songs still sung on the Riva at sunset.

Walk its narrow streets and you’ll feel how Vrsar breathes. The cobblestones warm underfoot, shutters open to the scent of pine and sea, and time folds easily into the slow gestures of daily life. From the citadel at the top of the hill, once the summer seat of Poreč’s bishops, the view spills across roofs that glow like amber in late afternoon light. Below, fishing boats sway in quiet rhythm, and the old town rests as though carved from the same limestone that built the coast.

Here, art and sea meet in soft conversation. Sculptors once settled above the town, in DuĆĄan DĆŸamonja’s open-air atelier where steel and sky still speak to each other. Casanova came twice, finding both love and freedom in Vrsar’s stone labyrinth — perhaps understanding what the sea already knew: that in places like this, passion and peace are made of the same tide. Beyond the walls, olive groves and cypresses line the paths to Koversada and the long curves of Lim Bay, where silence lingers like mist on the water.

In Vrsar, beauty doesn’t announce itself. It unfolds slowly — in the sound of the bell tower, in the laughter from a shaded cafĂ©, in the golden evening that gathers over the marina. And when you leave, the scent of the sea follows you inland, like a gentle reminder that some places are not meant to be rushed through but quietly lived.
